06:34 pm - Lessons from Biology: How can we live long and healthy? --Updated 12/29/08 First off... Happy Thanksgiving! Now... exercise and a good diet are probably the most important factors in health, but...
It's a wonder that only about 55 and 57 years ago DNA/RNA and proteins, as we know them now, were brand new discoveries. In half a century, we've come from knowing nothing about these building blocks of life to sequencing and mapping our own genome and manipulating the DNA of lesser animals from flies to mice. This is a staggeringly short time, a scientific singularity, and as such every year major advances in our understanding of biology are made. Other than exercise and a good diet, let me go into four new "breakthroughs" that have been recently made in regards to the effects of the molecules Methylene Blue, Quercetin, Omega fatty acids, and Resveratrol on metabolism, immunology, cancer and ultimately life span; and how one can use these to increase your health and potentially life.
( Methylene Blue )
( Quercetin )
( Omega Fatty Acids )
( Resveratrol )
There you have it, four super chemicals that may change the face of medicine, and lead to substantially longer and healthier lives. In summary:
Methylene blue - ~300-1000 micrograms (30-100 microliters of 1% solution, so you'll need a syringe or dropper (1 drop is ~50 microliters), or to dilute it more) daily, giving about 100-300 nanomoles in the body, may stop Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, increase life span, stop mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular aging, and reverse cellular senescence.
Quercetin - 500-1000 mg (40 mg in one apple if with skin) daily acts to kill cancer while leaving healthy tissue healthy; kill viruses; enhance the power of the immune system, while acting as an anti-inflammatory/anti-histamine to stop self damage; enhance physical energy and endurance, metal concentration and focus; increase heart and vascular health; protect neurons and cells from necrosis; and act as an anti-oxidant to prevent damage associated with aging.
Omega Fatty Acids - From flax seed oil, 1.2-4 grams daily greatly increases heart, vascular, and brain healthy to reduce heart disease/attacks, hardening of the arteries, and strokes. May have even more beneficial roles.
Resveratrol - 500-3600 mg daily (can be bought anywhere from 500-1000 mg capsules, or 250 mg with tween-80 which is super effectively absorbed, otherwise 500-1000 mg per day is probably enough when paired with quercetin), also found in red grapes/wine. Very powerful anti-aging compound and protector from associated ill effects, as well as metabolism enhancer and protector from the ill effects of a high fat diet (in mouse studies it grants the same health as if on a perfect diet). Increases physical power by double at highest listed dose, in mice, but a person should stay around 200-500 mg with quercetin. Some anti-cancer and radiation protective effects, bone and joint protection, heart and vascular protection, and neurological protection.
All of these except methylene blue are available over the counter at pharmacies and "natural/whole" food stores. Methylene blue is available over the counter at science/hobby stores, and some pharmacies in certain places (Walgreen's in Florida).
Note, this is a rough guide, and anything one ingests they do so at their own risk :P. But I'm taking the first three at the levels recommended here already, and have experienced marked benefits - especially from quercetin which has greatly increased my daily energy level, in that I don't feel nearly as tired as I always did before. Methylene blue and omega-3s are more passive, the effects they give you can't be seen till later in life by you not getting sick and suffering horrible effects of aging and associated diseases like Alzheimer's and heart disease. Although, methylene blue and omega fatty acid effects also can manifest in better skin health/glow and faster nail growth, all signs of happy cells. Resveratrol is also mostly passive if one is already healthy, however it does increase cold resistance I've discovered, quite well too!
I also don't take anything on the weekend, giving my body time to detox and reset to normal - which may or may not be important, who knows; but I feel it's quite important, to avoid desensitization and any unknown chronic effects, and I tend to think our natural levels are important to keep around, in a holistic sense.
Ah science.. who knows what we'll find next - but considering these compound (aside from methylene blue, which was a total shock) all come from natural sources that were known to give remarkable health benefits (apple a day...), I guess it is one of those "about time" sort of things, haha; dunno how many more may be out there, if any other major ones like these four. 09:51 am - Every light is born in darkness Ahahaha, I guess I should update since things are much better now. I completely changed my idea for the oral, so now I have something that's tractable and makes sense. This means, instead of floundering confusedly, I can actually get to work. Although, solving the problem of getting myself to work on it is still there, but that problem is far, far more surmountable ;3.
What is it they say? Most people drown ten feet from shore or something? That laaasst little leg of the journey can often be the hardest. It's probably some dreaded, mutant form of senioritus, actually D: Afterall, all these problems with it can pretty much be summed up with two words, "uncaring laziness". *cough* I blame summer! Yeah, that's the ticket!
Thanks you very much, Carcano, for your kind words. They help more than you know :). After all, I need to succeed, if not simply so I can watch out for others and those I care for.
Rynn and Rachel tomorrow! I.. oh man, I should clean D:! Current Mood: thoughtful

10:01 am - To crush a neutron star ( Ho hum )
I should probably talk about happier things.. Oh! Blue's visit was amazing! Muchly incredible and fun. Seeing him go stunk, and I miss him quite a bit. And all the Teal'c say, "Indeeeed."
Be nice to have a friend around here again once Rynn gets in on the same day Rachel is flying back from Oklahoma where she and everyone else on her father's living will are trying to decide what to do with him now that his SCA is really getting bad (I suspect the medications for it are what are causing him the most trouble as SCA should only affect his motor skills, not his lucidity and consciousness). What else... got a new fridge after our last one pooped out, this one is much bigger and more awesome. I guess that's pretty much it. Time to go back to neglecting this place XD. 08:51 pm - Summer fields and lightning bugs Wow, so I was reading rynndragon's post and was amazed at how long ago that feels.. like another life time. So much has happened... Well, I did my comps and they weren't too bad. Won't know the results for awhile though. Now I have to work on the oral dissertation thingy, which needs to be done by August. I should get started sometime soon, especially now that my lab is being turned into a construction zone till Wednesday, making it impossible to do anything super constructive like I was hoping for. I was so geared up to do a ton of stuff, bah!
Bluescales will be visiting in a two weeks and a day, which makes me squee with delight, to say the least. My only wish is he could stay longer 6.6. Also, have to steal Rynn away again sometime soon and force him to visit us and be subject to horrifying things with no end. It's the law, you see.
What else.. err.. not much really. Life is a lot better without classes breathing down my back. So, gunna spend my new free time doing reading, mental exercises, mauling people, all that great stuff. Current Mood: cheerful

09:56 pm - A shift 20 apart So exhausted.. Rachel's vacation is almost over, and I hope she had a great time! I gotta draw something to commemorate her great catfish catching skills. Urg.. so much to study for the comprehensive exam, I gotta get crackin. Six hours of pain over everything we were taught the last two years. Well, off to bed. Current Mood: sleepy

04:00 pm - An end of an end Finally, the final Final is done and gone with forever (hopefully)! That means, no more real classes, aside from any my PI may or may not make me take randomly sometime possibly in the future. Buutt, my career in classes is over and done for good, and now I've got my Masters degree, woot.
Just gotta clean as family coming for graduation ceremonies. Yerp, yerp. Current Mood: relieved

06:31 pm - Kung Fu legend "The Forbidden Kingdom" is a really fun movie. People should see it if they want an entertaining way to kill an afternoon.
My paper is getting published! In an impact 6 journal too (which is pretty high). Ok, so it isn't my paper and I'm just a minor author, but it's still cool. Now, I won't be a real scientist till I have 6 or 11 first author papers to my name... XD
Two weeks left of classes for (pretty much) ever. So much to do.. three tests, two presentations, and so little time indeed! Here we go! Current Mood: amused

04:59 pm - All Star, Star Star Gave my first IRSS talk today, which is an intra department seminar thing. It went really well, but boy was it so incredibly draining, oooohhhh. On that same note, research is going.. well going, which is the same old story; but my first scientific paper with my name on it is currently under minor revision prior to publication, which basically means it is :D. Woo, my name is finally going to be stamped upon SCIENCE! (not the journal, just the.. oh nevermind) Of course, I'm not first author as my role was rather minor albeit very important, so I've found out.
Annnnnnnyways, that's enough horn tooting. Spring is finally coming, for which I'm eminently grateful. And, well, can't think of anything else to put down, so that's that. Woop. Current Mood: accomplished

07:05 pm - Change in abilities Whoa man, I guess I should post in here, seeing as it's a whole new year and stuffz.
It's amazing how fast things change in the mental realm when you are some place that is conducive to your growth. It also makes me realize how lacking in ways ones early education is. It's like the difference between two scientific papers I had to compare/contrast for a homework assignment recently. One wasn't that well written, and the other was good. But it wasn't something easily quantified. It was little things that built up to make the whole experience what it was. Such minor details can swamp out the majority of the paper and decide it's appeal. The same goes for most things in life it appears, even education. There are certain things that seem minor, but when stacked together are so abundantly important.
I've grown so much since undergrad. And yet, it's once again in those little things.
It's a little sad though that I find it hard to get the want to write anything here. It isn't an unwillingness to do so, or the want to not do so, it's just the act of not doing it. The same goes for me talking to people on-line lately. I love talking with my friends, but for some reason I just am not. There are some people who are definite exceptions, but nonetheless. It's kinda like how I feel about my homework right now. I want to do it, and yet I find it hard to do it. Bah, I need to, and that need outweighs anything else.
In less introspective things, life is going great at the moment. I am hoping that the IRS gets finished setting up its new ARM processing system soon so I can get my refund check. Switched back to cable and digital phone, so that means a new phone number. Now that ADT has worked out the bugs of the digital system, it's all good; on top of that, it's 20 bucks less than AT&T, and that's before the AT&T rate hike has hit.
Ok, back to homework. Current Mood: busy
